World famous BMX champ now makes cool custom furniture in Vancouver

There’s no doubting Jay Miron’s BMX career was awesome. The “Canadian Beast” freestyle rider is credited with inventing over 30 BMX tricks, and brought in 9 X Games medals. Having retired from the sport, Miron has done a career flip: He designs and builds bespoke furniture in Vancouver.

Miron, 47, is the man behind the eponymous Jay Miron Furniture. From his East Vancouver studio, Miron uses techniques and skills taught to him from woodworking masters, with a deep respect for the materials and the process.

While it’s a far cry from the brash, bold, physicality of BMX, Miron’s work reflects what else can be done with the right tools and your own hands.

Miron talked to V.I.A. in 2009 about why he loves Vancouver, and he definitely had a zest for the city, nature, and design. And judging by the giant Jenga game he’s built, it’s clear the former BMX champion is still playful in his new role in the world of woodworking.
